Students from the Department of Sociology participated in a field study on May 21, 2025 (Wednesday) in Yumrukaya Village as part of the Sociology of Aging course conducted by Dr. Zuhal Güler. The study aimed to provide students with hands-on field experience in the social sciences and to strengthen intergenerational interaction.
The event began with students gathering in front of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Before heading to the field, students were informed about ethical principles and interview techniques to be observed during the study. The group then proceeded to Yumrukaya Village, located just beside the university campus in central Bolu.
The students were welcomed at the village café by Deputy Headman Şaban Çırpan, who provided them with information about the history and socio-demographic structure of the village. After the introduction, students visited various households in the village and conducted one-on-one interviews with residents aged 65 and older who agreed to participate. They had the opportunity to listen to the life stories of the elderly and benefit directly from their experiences.
These interviews were not only an academic exercise but also helped students empathize with elderly individuals, witness their pasts, and gather data for oral history projects. This meaningful interaction contributed to mutual understanding and respect between generations.
After completing the fieldwork, students gathered again at the village café. Yumrukaya Village Headman Enes Yılmaz and Deputy Headman Şaban Çırpan thanked the students for their engagement and joined them for a group photo. The program concluded with the students returning to campus.
Such practice-based course activities organized by the Sociology Department allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-life settings, while also fostering social sensitivity, responsibility, and empathy.
