Our Faculty's Department of History Faculty Member, Prof. Dr. Yusuf YILDIZ, is presenting his new book, which explores the journey of coffee from its discovery to the Ottoman Empire and Vienna. The work titled “The Adventure of Coffee from the Ottoman Empire to Vienna (Viennese Coffeehouses, the Birth of Coffee Culture, and the Role of the Turks)” appeals to both the scientific community and coffee enthusiasts with its rich content compiled from Austrian and Ottoman archives.

Prof. Dr. Yusuf YILDIZ, known for his studies in European History, Diplomatic History, and History of Ideas, seeks to answer the following questions in his book:

  • How did coffee transform into a lifestyle in Europe?
  • Why is the Turkish connection to coffee so significant?
  • How does a beverage create a shared value across different cultures?

The book thoroughly discusses the journey of coffee from Ethiopia to Ottoman trade routes and then to the prestigious coffeehouses of Vienna. It examines the role of Ottoman ambassadors in introducing coffee to Vienna and how coffee created a culture within Vienna's intellectual circles during this process. The tradition of coffeehouses inherited from the Ottoman Empire and the transformations it underwent from the 17th century to the present are also comprehensively addressed in the book.

We congratulate our esteemed faculty member and wish him continued success in his scholarly endeavors.
